Hey there, readers! I’m coming to your inbox one day earlier than usual with a themed discussion thread. Memorial Day was first observed at the end of May in 1868 to commemorate and remember those who lost their lives in the Civil War. It’s been recognized ever since as a day to solemnly remember anyone who’s perished while serving in America’s armed forces.
It’s an especially appropriate time of year to read war memoirs as well as history books that delve into the lived experiences of men and women who have courageously served their country.
Above are a few of my favorites. In the comments, I’d love to hear from you. What books do you recommend for commemorating Memorial Day?
Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels, about the Battle of Gettysburg is really good, and reads like a novel. Now that I wrote this, I want to reread it! Have a great day off, all. I'm celebrating 35 years of marriage today.
