These Are a Few of My Favorite Links: 04/12/22
Every other week, I send an email that solely features great links for you to peruse throughout the week and weekend. Enjoy!
“The Winners of Smithsonian Magazine’s 19th Annual Photo Contest” — These photos are incredible. Check ‘em out. Then try to take the same sort of photo on your iPhone and take a minute to realize that professional photographers are true artists.
“The guy who quit medical school to become an NBA referee” — This article represents the best of what sports writing can be. Why would anyone, nonetheless an aspiring doctor, want to pursue the career path of the most universally hated position in sports? What does it take to make the cut as a pro? And what does the lifestyle entail?
“The Schism Breaking Apart the ‘Prepper’ Community” — One of my favorite reads of last year was Bradley Garrett’s Bunker, which is a deep cultural exploration of prepper culture. Anything related to that community is massively interesting to me.
“OREGON TRAIL IS CHANGING SO THAT WE SHARE LESS OF YOUR PRIVATE DYSENTERY INFORMATION” — McSweeney’s’ brand of satire is always up my alley. If it includes a great ‘90s reference to the classic Oregon Trail computer game, all the better. If this short piece doesn’t make you crack a smile . . . well, it just means you’re not a late 80s/early 90s baby.
My New Favorite Notebook — Last Tuesday, I wrote about the particular writing utensil I’ve grown loyal to. To go with it, I’ve discovered this lovely notebook. I don’t quite know what’s different about the paper, but the pencil just writes better on it. Trust me.
“How to Use the Two-Week Rule to Become Remarkably Successful” — It’s rare that I’m into any type of self-help writing these days, but Jeff Haden is one of the most frequent exceptions to that rule. This piece is a good one.
Thanks so much for reading! I deeply appreciate it.
