I just discovered a humorous mystery-thriller series by Amy Vansant, which kicks off with The Girl Who Wants. Set in Florida, the series has a female protagonist and plenty of offbeat minor characters-- both the "good guys" and the baddies. Perfect for beach and pool-side reading.
I love the Louise Penny books as well, but sometimes the choppy non-sentences make me a little crazy. I guess it's the grammar nerd in me. I keep reading them though!
Huge Louise Penny fan, but late to the party! I have read through Glass Houses in order. I wait a few weeks between books and imagine that Three Pines is enjoying a little time with no murder! Ive read most of them this year!
I would add my favorite "detective", Rick Deckard from Philip Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep." To my knowledge, the book and the movie ("Bladerunner") are the only places Deckard makes an appearance. Bernie Gunther from Philip Kerr's novels also deserve a nod.

Of course, just my opinion.
