It’s time, once again, to chat about our favorite reads of the previous month.
JEREMY: I’ve been on a real hot streak of history reads, so it was hard to pick this month’s favorite, but Target Tokyo by James Scott takes the cake. Vivid storytelling and breakneck pacing — I couldn’t put it down. On the fiction side, I really loved my third reading of Larry McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove, especially because it was alongside hundreds of others over at Dying Breed.
JANE: The Borrowed Life of Frederik Fife by Anna Johnston was an easy pick for Jane this month. It’s just a nice story about a down-on-his-luck old dude who finds a way into some community. Jane always has a soft spot for older protagonists.
GRAHAM (11 years old): The oldest kiddo is firmly out of middle grade books and into YA and even adult titles. This month he really liked I Am Not a Robot by Joanna Stern, which is an adult non-fiction book about a woman who experiments with using AI for just about everything for a year.
WILLA (8 years old): I was not familiar with Louis Sachar’s Wayside Stories series before Willa picked it out and wanted me to read it to her in July. We both absolutely loved it. Silly and fun and wholesome.
BO (5 years old): This kid is obsessed with Minecraft these days (the free educational version, don’t worry!) and likes to check out books like The Minecraft Ideas Book from the library — just to flip through and look at the pictures. Goofball.
