Hi Jeremy, finally pulled the trigger and subscribed to the Big Read. Should we just get a copy of Dune now and just kickoff in Jan? Or is it best to start early?
Sign me up! I am really enjoying the Big Read book club, having been in it since War and Peace.
I read Dune as an undergraduate, many years ago, and wasn't too thrilled by it. I'm hoping that a re-read and discussions in the club will change my mind.
For Crime and Punishment, do you recommend the Pevear translation? I have read good things about the "new translation" by Katz. https://bookshop.org/p/books/crime-and-punishment-a-new-translation-fyodor-dostoevsky/18508634?ean=9781631495311. Katz doesn't have notes, which I found helpful in War and Peace and The Count of Monte Cristo. The Paver translation your posting links to does have the notes section. Does any one have any thoughts as to which to choose?
I found a website that gives an example of all the translations by the different translators of the book Crime and Punishment, it's https://welovetranslations.com/2020/04/25/whats-the-best-translation-of-crime-and-punishment/. I found it to be really interesting. I already had a copy of the book which was translated by Constance Garnett and I found I liked her translations better than the Pevear translation. Check it out and see what you think.
What a great selection, Jeremy. I will be along for most of the ride - just skipping October. I just can’t read horror/thriller stories. I’ve read Dune, Jane Eyre and Great Expectations in my youth, and look forward to reading after a lifetime of experience!
Looking forward to a great year of reading. Love the variety...though I am trusting you BIG on Dune. I am not a sci-fi fan, but I know you will make it interesting.
Looking forward to another year of great reading with The Big Read! Appealing choices, Jeremy, and I‘m intrigued by the different authors, genres and time periods. Reading these will be fun and rewarding.
Very excited for this line up. Only two are re-reads (Dune and Haunting) and I look forward to doing so with the group. The others have been on my list for years so I can't wait to not only read them but watch the movies and compare. I appreciate you always picking books with adaptations...or maybe big classic books are just so adaptable. Either way, 2024 is going to rule!

Hey there! Glad to have you aboard! Yes, go ahead and get your copy of Dune. I'll send some more info to the group this week. :)
Got my copy of Dune in the mail today. Excited to join this upcoming year!
