It’s time, once again, to chat about our favorite reads of the previous month.
JEREMY: I already wrote about how much I enjoyed Jonathan Jordan’s Ike and Winston. It was a delightful, easy-reading story of a friendship between powerful people. On the fiction side, I devoured Five Decembers by James Kestrel. I hadn’t heard of it before perusing the Edgars winners list; it’s a page-turning, pulse-pounding, kick-ass WWII mystery/thriller.
JANE: My wife had quite a good reading month and went with Monica Wood’s How to Read a Book as her favorite. The title tries to trick you, but it’s in fact a novel about how some bookstore patrons’ lives begin to intersect in unexpected ways. I’ve put it on my list, too.
GRAHAM (11 years old): For all its funny, cheesy goodness and humor, Graham rather enjoyed The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich by Deya Muniz. Apparently the characters are named after cheeses. Sounds appetizing.
WILLA (8 years old): We continue our read-aloud journey through Louis Sachar’s Wayside Stories series. The third in the series, Wayside School Gets a Little Stranger, has been a highlight of the bunch for sure. It has a little more of a through-line than the others and introduces some very clever new characters. I’m really enjoying these books, too!
BO (5.5 years old): The little one continues to enjoy the Minecraft books that he regularly gets from the library — perhaps even more so than playing the game itself. (Not a bad thing!) The Woodsword Chronicles is the latest to grace our household.
Your turn! What was your favorite September read?
